BLEPHAROPLASTY

Blepharoplasty is a type of surgery that repairs droopy eyelids. As you age, your eyelids stretch, and the muscles supporting them weaken. As a result, excess fat may gather above and below your eyelids, causing sagging eyebrows, droopy upper lids and bags under your eyes. Our board certified dermatologist and certified mohs micrographic surgeon, Dr. Neil Sandhu, at Annexus Dermatology & Aesthetics, located in Orange City, Florida, is well-versed in reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. To schedule a consultation, book online or call the office and speak with a friendly staff member today.

Blepharoplasty surgery Q&A

What is a Blepharoplasty surgery?

Eyelid surgery is primarily sought by people looking for anti-aging treatments. Sagging of the skin around your eyes is a natural part of aging, but you may consider this type of surgery if you’re starting to find such effects bothersome. Candidates also seek out blepharoplasty if they have significant bags under their eyes or if their eyebrows are starting to sag. For some people, a blepharoplasty goes beyond cosmetic concerns. You might be a good candidate for this procedure if your vision is affected by sagging skin. Some people may complain that their vision when looking upwards is blocked by the hanging skin. Blepharoplasty can reduce or eliminate these vision problems and make your eyes appear younger and more alert.

what is involved in Blepharoplasty Surgery?

A blepharoplasty, also known as an eyelift, usually takes about 1 hour and it is done in a comfortable setting in our office at Annexus Dermatology & Aesthetics. Dr. Sandhu will most likely use local anesthesia (a painkiller injected around the eye) with oral sedation.

Dr. Sandhu will usually cut along the natural lines of your eyelids. Through these cuts, he will separate the skin from the underlying tissue and remove the excess fat and skin. Next, he will close those cuts with very small stitches. The stitches in the upper lids will stay for 3-6 days.

Your doctor will put ointment in your eyes to keep them moist and cover them with cold compresses while you’re in the recovery room. Right after surgery, you may have blurry vision from the ointment and be sensitive to light. Your eyes may feel dry or watery. It will help to put ice packs on your eyes and sleep with your head raised the first night after surgery. Dr. Sandhu will give you detailed instructions for taking care of yourself.

What will my results look like?

Many people express satisfaction with the results of blepharoplasty, such as a more rested and youthful appearance and more self-confidence. For some people, results of surgery may last a lifetime. For others, droopy eyelids may recur. Bruising and swelling generally subside in 10 to 14 days, which may be when you feel comfortable going out in public again. Scars from the surgical cuts may take months to fade. Take care to protect your delicate eyelid skin from too much sun exposure.

It is impossible to cut the skin without scarring in some way, so you will always have some sort of scar. Your dermatologist at Annexus Dermatology &  Aesthetics will plan the incision along the eyelid crease to carefully disguise any scar to ensure that your cosmetic outcome looks very natural. Some people have an abnormal response to skin healing and these people may get larger scars than usual (keloid or hypertrophic scarring). If this occurs, your dermatologist can counsel you on treatment options.
