rosacea Q&A

What is rosacea?

Rosacea is a benign skin disease identified by reddened skin – especially on the face, neck and chest. There are four types of rosacea, each of which causes different types of symptoms. In addition to redness, the various types of rosacea may also cause flushing, visible blood vessels, swelling, acne-like breakouts, bumpy skin, thickened skin, or red and swollen eyes. This redness may come and go, or it may be permanent among people who have suffered from the condition for a long time. Some people also experience stinging and burning sensations, as well as overly dry or oily skin. Your pores may also appear enlarged.

What causes rosacea?

Rosacea affects men and women. The condition seems to run in families and can be aggravated by a number of factors, including:

  • Hormonal changes
  • Hot drinks and spicy foods
  • Red wine and other alcoholic beverages
  • Temperature extremes
  • Sunlight or wind
  • Emotions
  • Exercise
  • Drugs that dilate blood vessels, including some blood pressure medications
  • Various cosmetic products

how do you treat rosacea?

Our experts at Annexus Dermatology & Aesthetics know the signs and symptoms of rosacea vary substantially from one patient to another, and treatment must therefore be tailored for each individual case. Some patients are troubled by redness and flushing, while others have bumps and pimples, thickening of the skin, or eye rosacea or combinations.

For patients with bumps and pimples, our providers at Annexus Dermatology & Aesthetics often prescribe oral and topical rosacea therapy. Although not typically covered by insurance, when appropriate, laser treatments are highly effective in removing visible blood vessels and extensively reducing the redness. At Annexus Dermatology & Aesthetics in Orange City, Florida, we operate lasers that can be used to help control your redness.

Annexus Dermatology & Aesthetics provides rosacea patients with a treatment plan which includes ways to identify and avoid lifestyle and environmental factors that may aggravate their individual conditions, as well as a skin care plan centered on ways to reduce the effect of rosacea on appearance.
