LIPOMAS

A lipoma is a non-cancerous tumor made up of fat cells. It slowly grows under the skin in the subcutaneous tissue. A person may have a single lipoma or many lipomas, and they are very common. At Annexus Dermatology & Aesthetics, with locations in Port Orange, DeLand, and Orange City, FL, Neil Sandhu, MD, FAAD, and the team of physician assistant providers employ several techniques to treat and remove lipomas in a relatively painless method that requires little recovery time. Lipomas Q & A

A lipoma is a growth of fatty tissue that slowly develops under your skin. People of any age can develop a lipoma, but children rarely develop them. Lipomas typically appear on the neck, shoulders, forearms, arms, and thighs, but they can occur anywhere on the body where fat tissue is present. They’re classified as benign growths, or tumors, of fatty tissue. This means a lipoma isn’t cancerous and is rarely harmful.

The cause of lipomas is unknown. It is possible there may be genetic involvement as many patients with lipomas come from a family with a history of these tumours. Sometimes an injury such as a blunt blow to part of the body may trigger the growth of a lipoma.

People are often unaware of lipomas until they have grown large enough to become visible and palpable. This growth occurs slowly over several years. Most lipomas are symptomless, but some are painful when applying pressure. Some features of a lipoma include:

·       A dome-shaped or egg-shaped lump about 2–10 cm in diameter (some may grow even larger)

·       It feels soft and smooth and is easily moved under the skin with the fingers

·       It may have a rubbery or doughy consistency

·       Lipomas are most common on the shoulders, neck, trunk and arms

No treatment is usually necessary for a lipoma. However, if the lipoma bothers you, is painful or is growing, your provider at Annexus Dermatology & Aesthetics may recommend that it be removed. Most lipomas are removed surgically by cutting them out. Recurrences after removal are uncommon. Possible side effects are scarring and bruising.
