melasma Q&A

What is melasma?

Melasma is a common skin problem that presents as brown or gray patchy pigmentation. It typically appears on the cheeks, bridge of the nose, forehead, chin, and above the upper lip. Melasma may occur on other parts of the body that get a lot of sun, such as the forearms and neck.  It occurs far more commonly in women than in men, and is especially common in women with darker skin.

What causes melasma?

Although the exact cause of melasma is unknown, affected people often have a family history of melasma. In addition, a change in hormonal status, particularly pregnancy and birth control pills, are commonly associated with melasma, and melasma is often referred to as the “mask of pregnancy”. Post-menopausal hormone replacement therapy has not been shown to cause melasma.

can melasma be treated?

Melasma has no cure, and can be resistant to treatment. It may take time to fully treat the appearance of existing melasma. A combination of treatments may work best. Working with a board-certified dermatologist at Aspire Dermatology & Aesthetics is important for proper diagnosis of any skin condition, and development of a treatment plan that works well for you.

how do you treat melasma?

Aspire Dermatology & Aesthetics diagnoses melasma by reviewing your medical history and asking about your symptoms and lifestyle. Because of its characteristic appearance, your provider at Aspire Dermatology & Aesthetics can easily diagnose melasma with a skin examination.

There are a variety of options for treating melasma. Hydroquinone is considered among the most effective treatments of melasma. It is applied topically to the pigmented areas and lightens the skin over time and is well tolerated.

Tretinoin gel (the generic form of Retin-A) may be prescribed in combination with hydroquinone. Tretinoin helps to increase the rate at which the skin turns over, which can enhance the efficacy of the hydroquinone.

We may recommend medical-grade skin care products as well to brighten skin tone. Chemical peels containing vitamins and acids may also help by treating deep enough in the dermis to reach melasma.

how do i manage my melasma?

Regardless of treatment, sun protection is essential for melasma patients because sun damage can trigger or worsen melasma. Treatment that removes the appearance of melasma does not prevent new pigment from forming. Avoid sun exposure or sustained time in the sun, and wear hats and long sleeves when you can’t avoid it.
